Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALC) is a modified amino acid that supports cellular energy production by assisting in the transport of fat into the mitochondria where it is converted into ATP (cellular fuel).* ALC is a highly bioavailable form of Carnitine that can cross the blood-brain barrier, where it helps to neutralize free radicals, supports mitochondrial function and helps to maintain normal neurotransmitter activity.*
Carnitine is classified as an amino acid, although it is not an amino acid in the classic sense. Amino acids are generally used by the body for protein synthesis and/or as a neurotransmitter. Carnitine, which is closely related to B vitamins, is primarily used to facilitate the transport of long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria of cells for energy production.* This process provides energy to fuel muscles, including the heart, through the oxidation of fat (fat burning).* Muscle cells that use the most energy, particularly heart cells, can benefit by having adequate carnitine levels.*
In a study conducted by NOW Foods, three healthy adult volunteers, 22 to 55 years old, participated in a clinical trial to study the bioavailability of Acetyl L-Carnitine 500 mg. Total serum Carnitine was measured at baseline, and again at 1, 3, and 6 hours following oral administration of 2 capsules providing 1 gram (1,000 mg) of Acetyl-L-Carnitine.
The results were that average serum Carnitine peaked three hours after supplement administration, reaching 25% over the baseline level. Six hours post-supplementation, average Carnitine concentration remained elevated 20% over the baseline level. This Bioavailability Study confirms the exceptional bioavailability of Acetyl-L-Carnitine 500 mg Veg Caps.
Average total serum carnitine level before, and 1, 3, and 6 hours following a single administration of two Acetyl-L-Carnitine 500 mg Veg Capsules providing 1,000 mg of acetyl-L-carnitine in healthy adult volunteers.
