Oral Hygiene Includes More Than Just Brushing and Flossing

Bruce Baar, MS, ND     |     Kathy Baar BS, RDH

Oral hygiene, by definition, is the practice of keeping the mouth and teeth clean. We grew up learning how to brush our teeth and are often reminded by our dental hygienist that flossing between teeth is just as important.  Healthy gums are vital to our overall well-being. They are a protective type of tissue that cover the roots of the teeth adding support, as well as providing a barrier to plaque and bacteria. Keeping your teeth and gums healthy can prevent damage to the deeper tissues and bones which hold your teeth in place.

What is Ioxan?Ioxan of oral hygiene Product Image [1]

Ioxan [1]™ is a natural herbal gum massage formula that helps to stimulate the gums, soothe mouth ulcers and support the body’s ability to fight bacterial growth in the mouth. Containing a blend of natural ingredients including Prickly Ash bark, Calcium Chloride, Sodium Chloride and Iodine, this unique formula works to protect teeth and strengthen gums. Ioxan™ may be massaged into gum areas, brushed on as liquid toothpaste or diluted for use as a natural mouthwash.

How does Ioxan help oral hygiene?

Traditionally, Native Americans chewed the bark of the Prickly Ash tree for its numbing effect on toothaches. The shrub became known as the “toothache tree” and its bark is still used today for dental health. The primary herbal ingredient in Ioxan™, Prickly Ash Bark, acts as an antiseptic and enhances circulation to encourage healing of the tissues surrounding the teeth.

Another ingredient, Sodium Chloride (salt), acts as an astringent to shrink swelling of the gum tissue, as well as improve the flow of saliva. This allows other beneficial ingredients, such as the Prickly Ash Bark and Iodine, to reach and strengthen the deeper tissues surrounding the teeth. Salt can also increase the pH of the mouth, alkalizing it to deter the production and reproduction of many bacteria which cause diseases such as gingivitis [2].

Calcium Chloride, when dissolved into water, produces calcium ions. Being an aqueous solution, Ioxan™ provides the teeth with calcium ions which are essential to the process of the mineralization of teeth and bones.

When massaged into the gums, the Iodine works to combat the bacteria that cause tooth decay and gum disease. It can also be beneficial for relieving mouth ulcers.

Use Ioxan [1]™ daily or several times a week as part of your regular dental hygiene program. Taking proper care of your mouth can help you keep your teeth for a lifetime!
