The Lymphatic System’s primary function is to transport lymph fluid, which is comprised of infection-fighting white blood cells called lymphocytes, throughout the body. Lymph moves in only one direction, towards the heart. The lymphatic system does not use the heart to pump its lymph fluid and must rely on the contraction of the body’s muscles to circulate it. Lymph vessels carry and drain fluid from virtually all tissues to help maintain the body’s fluid balance, remove waste and attack foreign invaders. Lymph nodes store and produce these infection-fighting white blood cells in response to illness, infection or stress. In a particularly strong infection, lymph nodes can become swollen and are oftentimes felt in the neck, underarms and groin.
One of the major roles of the lymphatic system is to aid the immune system by removing and destroying waste, toxins and harmful pathogens. Lymph vessels allow water, nutrients and gases to pass through, nourishing the surrounding cells as they remove impurities. Lymph vessels are also found in the lining of the gastrointestinal tract and work to transport fat and specific vitamins from the small intestines to the bloodstream. A malfunction of this part of the lymphatic system can result in serious malnutrition. Improper functioning of the Lymphatic system can also result in its obstruction, allowing lymph fluid to build up in the tissues, a condition known as Lymphedema.*
Massage has been shown to relieve stress, support healthy circulation and lymph flow, support immune function, relieve muscle and joint pain, and support the body's ability to recover from of a variety of conditions that affect muscles and nerves. Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), a specific type of Lymphatic massage, offers a gentle massage designed to encourage the natural flow of lymph through the body. It is important for those who are unable to exercise to get regular lymphatic massages.*
