Melatonin is a natural hormone made in the pineal gland, a pea-size gland located in the brain. Since its first discovery in 1958, melatonin has been studied extensively and shown to play a significant role in mediating a wide array of cyclic behavior. Recent studies have demonstrated a role for melatonin in facilitating the onset of natural sleep. Natural secretion of melatonin decreases as one ages which can cause insomnia, especially in people over 50. By taking melatonin instead of other so called sleeping aids, rapid eye movement sleep is not suppressed nor does it induce "hangover" effects when used as directed.
Adults: Squeeze bulb to draw the liquid melatonin into dropper. One squeeze (1/2 dropper) equals about one serving (0.75 mg). Mix with a small amount of water or juice 30 minutes before bedtime. What are the advantages of Liquid Melatonin?
Liquid Melatonin is very fast acting because it does not have to dissolve, but goes right to work. Another advantage of liquid melatonin is that it is much easier to take than a capsule or tablet, and the dosage is easily adjusted by the number of dropperfuls consumed at one time ( each dropperful equals 1 mg of melatonin).
Can I take it with other medications?
It is wise to consult with your health care professional before taking melatonin.
What if I have high blood pressure?
Consult your health care professional prior to use.
When should I take melatonin and how much should I take?
For best results, melatonin should be taken approximately twenty minutes before bedtime. For most people, 3 mgs is usually enough. Liquid melatonin, 1 dropperful equals 1 mg-so adjust your dosage according to how much you need.
How often should I take melatonin?
That is up to you. Some people take it every day, others take it only when they feel like they may have trouble falling asleep. Many people without sleeping problems take melatonin daily for its antioxidant effects and/or because they believe it will help slow down the aging process.
Is melatonin habit forming?
No melatonin is not habit forming. In fact, many people find that Melatonin may have residual sleep enhancing effects for several days after taking it.
Who should take melatonin?
Anyone over the age of thirty who needs help in getting to sleep can take melatonin. The following people should not take melatonin unless recommended by their health care professions: children, pregnant or lactating women, people with seasonal affective disorders, people with acute schizophrenia, manic patients, people with leukemia or lymphoma.
How does melatonin work for jet lag?
Melatonin works by resetting your body's biological clock. When traveling across several time zones, your biological clock gets "out of sync" with the daily light/dark cycle of the new time zone. Normally, it takes several days for your body to adjust ( i.e. jet lag)/ When you take Melatonin at bedtime on your first night in the new time zone, you reset your biological clock to match that time zone. Thus, jet lag is prevented.
Is all commercially available Melatonin the same?
No. Sweet Dreams is one of the few US manufacturers of Melatonin with greater than 99.5% purity. We make our Melatonin from scratch using a proprietary manufacturing process which utilizes no plant or animal products. The scientists manufacturing Melatonin use a synthetic pathway which does not use tryptophan as a starting material.
